a california birthday

To celebrate Austin’s last year as a 20-something-year-old, we planned a little getaway to California for a few days. This trip also came in replacement to the New York City vacation that we were supposed to go on in September that we had to cancel last minute, so it was nice to be able to sneak away for a bit kid free! (Huge thank you to Austin’s ma and pop for taking care of Scarlett for us!!) We hit up Universal Studios for a couple days and witnessed the all amazing Harry Potter land, drank butterbeer just so we knew what it was, went to the Getty Museum which was beautiful, strolled down Hollywood Blvd, ate tasty food, waited in line to meet the Grinch only so we could show the picture to Scarlett, stumbled upon a free Alessia Cara concert, and made a quick visit to a chilly beach to catch an ocean view before heading home. And because I’m so far behind and still talking about December when it’s already June…I’ll leave it at that. Such a fun trip with my birthday boy!

two years old

My baby is two!

[and has been for over a month now but we won’t dwell on that].

Love her.

Scarlett is the sweetest little girl. Still a mama’s girl through and through but she’s always talking my ear off about dada so that makes him pretty special too. She currently thinks my name is “nana”…really don’t know where that came from, but I can’t get her to call me mama for the life of me! I think she knows it bugs me too because she always gets this grin when she says it, little stinker. Looks like I’ll just need to take on a more grandmotherly role? haha.

One of my favorite things about two year old Scarlett is that she has this overwhelming enthusiasm for the simplest things. We always say that she wears her emotions on her sleeve because there’s no need to guess when it comes to how she’s feeling, she lets you know. The absolute best is when she’s happy or excited, she’ll just squeal in delight, hop around, cheer, and very loudly repeat, “woooooow” and “wheeeeeee” and “yaaaaaaay” over and over and over. I don’t even know how to describe it, it’s just like pure joy. The happiness radiating from her is literally tangible. Bubbles, swings, slides, her doggy Conan, rice and beans, seeing her friends, grandparents, birds, airplanes, Monsters inc./Toy Story 3/Cinderella/Frozen, her bunny, you name it! She’ll have you believing that everything she thinks is awesome is the greatest thing in the world at that moment.

Her birthday was no exception which made it so fun this year. In her mind, it was probably the best day of her life so far haha. Every little aspect of that day just made her happy.

We started the day with a balloon extravaganza waiting for her when she woke up.

Having Gampa and Gigi there with us was definitely an added bonus. She loves them.

Then we settled her in to get her very first haircut! Gigi gave her the royal treatment, suckers and all.

After her haircut we got her all bathed and ready so we could surprise her with our present before heading to church. This girl l.o.v.e.s. helping mom cook so we thought a mini kitchen would be the perfect gift.

^Aunt Lynnea is her person.

Safe to say she was very pleased haha.

Then she got to open her presents from grandpa Billy and Gigi. Her faces are priceless.

So so happy. That kitchen is good and stocked.

That evening we had the family over to celebrate. Scarlett is obsessed with her bunny stuffed animals so we thought a bunny theme would be fitting.

2nd Birthday

This little video gets me every time haha. Perfect example of that enthusiasm I was talking about.

Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a special day!

Happy 2nd birthday, baby girl.

We love you so much!

PS. I borrowed a couple of these photos from my mom’s post. More memories here.

the birthday girl

Last Friday our sweet Scarlett Ann turned one.

How was this a year ago?!  Love love love being your mama, baby girl!

I still don’t really believe that we have a one year old.  It’s unreal how fast time flies these days!  One year old Scarlett is as spunky as ever.  Still a mama’s girl, but has a growing obsession with dad.  Every time he gets home from work she gets this huge smile and gets so excited that she usually trips over herself and lands on her face.  But then she’s right back up running to his arms.  It’s the sweetest thing.

She still l.o.v.e.s to nurse.  I’m hoping to wean her soon, but I have no idea how it’s gonna happen.  I’m a little lazy about really trying I guess, mostly because I know she’s not going to be a happy camper.  She never took a bottle, and only drinks out of a sippy cup for leisure so there’s not a real smooth transition technique.  My hope is that my milk supply will slowly dry up so she’ll have to adjust, or that she’ll just lose interest, but knowing her I’ll probably need to put forth a little more effort.  We’ll work on that.

You’ll always find her with some random object in her hand.  Most the time it’s a ball or two, but anything and everything is game.  Straws, mascara, lip gloss, q-tips, socks, dirty laundry, phone cords, balloons, combs, you name it.  That girl is never empty handed.  She also has this weird thing for a pair of headphones that Aust has.  Whenever he has them on, she’s there climbing on his lap, pointing and blabbering away.  She usually seems pretty pleased so she must think it’s a good look on him.

Lately she’s been really impressed by monkeys.  She thinks it’s sooo funny when we do oo-oo-ah-ah sounds and has started making them whenever she sees a monkey.  She has this touch-and-feel animal book and the only page she cares about is the one with the chimp.  She’ll open the book straight to that page and leave it there saying ah-ah-ah the entire time.  If I try to turn the page she gives me a quick pout and turns it right back to the monkey.  So determined!  It’s been so fun to watch her pick up on those little things.

She’s still a major Mickey Mouse fan, with Daniel Tiger close behind.  The characters in those shows bring her so much joy.  Every time she see’s them on the screen her little face lights up, she grins ear to ear, giggles, and squeals with delight.  It’s so weird.  There are certain parts in a couple episodes that she laughs at every. single. time.  It’s my favorite to hear her giggling in the back seat while I’m driving when a “funny” part comes on.  I always just think, how does she even know what’s happening?!  I’m tellin’ ya, she’s in it deep.

Here are her 12 month stats:

Weight: 17 pounds 14 ounces – 20th percentile

Height: 29.5 inches – 60th percentile

Head circumference: 46.5 cm – 85th percentile

Love her.

Now for a recap of her birthday celebrations.

We brought a few balloons into her room to start her day.  She was pleased as punch.

^^Daniel Tiger was on.

My family got into town around 2 o’clock and were a huge help in getting everything ready for the partay! I’m so so glad they could be there.  My grandparents 50th wedding anniversary celebration was the next day so the timing worked out perfectly!  Couldn’t have done it without them.  My dad even wore his Mickey Mouse shirt to get on Scarlett’s good side.  She was intrigued.

^^Huge thanks to my mama for making the perfect banners!

^^And huge thanks to my mother-in-law for making the adorable cakes! I’m surrounded by talented moms!

We decided to go with a hot dog theme in honor of Mickey Mouse.  Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog!

^^Favorite “present” of the night.

After dinner we decided to pull out the smash cake.  Everyone gathered to sing Happy Birthday which was a bit overwhelming to our shy, quiet-loving, not-a-fan-of-people-in-her-face, girl…

…once the song was over and the cake was in front of her she was able to compose herself.

She was pretty dainty with the cake,

so I threw in a spoon to help her out,

but then she decided she was more interested in the paper flower and her balloon.  Whatever floats your boat, honey buns.

We got her cleaned up and in her pj’s to open presents,

which she obviously hasn’t learned is the best part.

After the toys started coming out she became a little more interested.

As we neared the end of gift opening, our little lady was done.  We finished up and got that girl to bed!  My wonderful mamita is a pro at documenting things and has more pictures and details from the evening on her blog here.

We’re so grateful for all our friends and family that helped make it a special day!  Scarlett is blessed to have you all in her life.

Happy birthday, baby girl!

We love you!

march madness

Life has been a little bit insane this past month.  Lots of fun topped with lots of stress to get everything done before graduation in less than two weeks.
This Pinterest gem has been my motivational mantra to pull me through this semester.
I guess I wouldn’t say that it has helped motivate me, because I am far from feeling motivated, but has served more as a reminder that the end of my schooling career is very near.  Hallelujah!

Other than the stresses of school, the month of March served us well.  We celebrated my 22nd birthday (where in the world has time gone) with some friends at Chili’s and then Austin spoiled me with some shopping mula and yummy cheesecake.
A few days later, we were able to head off to Colorado for a week to spend some time with the fam, get some internship hours – for me, get some insurance training – for Aust, and pick out our soon to be newest family member!
How sweet is he!?  My parents just barely brought him home and Lexee will be bringing him to us this weekend.  Can’t wait.  We’ve been so anxious to get him – puppy bowls are out, dog blankets ready, and toys waiting.  If that’s not anxious I don’t know what is!
I’ll be sure to stay more on top of things after school is completely done.  Until then, you probably won’t be hearing from me.  I’ve got 100 internship hours to finish, six essays to write, three finals to go, and not enough time to do it all.  Graduation…ready or not, here I come.
I’ll see ya on the other side!

my birthday boy

Yesterday was Austin’s birthday.  He turned 25.  Weird, right?  25 seems so much older than 24.  He’s like a parent-aged adult now, just without the kids :)  We had a fun and very busy birthday weekend.  Last week I spent a couple days getting his birthday decorations ready when he wasn’t around.  And yes, I blew up 75 balloons by myself in one sitting.  I almost passed out every five balloons or so but I made it.
On Friday, I came home from work and ran around like a mad woman finishing his cake and bringing all the balloons downstairs so it would be all decked out when he came home.  That night we went to Buffalo Wild Wings with our friends, Kaitlin and Abe.  It was tasty. Then we went to our house to have cake and ice cream and play some aggravation.  Kaitlin and Abe killed us both times, what’s new :)

In the midst of those festivities the boys had a little too much fun with the balloons which resulted in this:

It was hilarious.
Me and Kaitlin joined in a little bit too…

That is pure joy right there.  And just ignore all of my empty picture frames :) It’s a work in progress.

Around midnight, we decided that Kaitlin and Abe should sleepover.  Aust was craving some biscuits and gravy for breakfast the next morning so we headed off to Walmart in the middle of the night to get everything.  Kaitlin and I used to make midnight runs to Walmart all the time when we were roommates so we were just re-living the glory days.  It was awesome.  When we got back, the boys continued to play with the balloons.  Who knew they would be such a hit?  Totally worth the lung workout.
We ended up going to bed around three – Aust had to stay up late one more time before he got too old ;)  Saturday morning we had biscuits and gravy which were delicious, said good bye to Kaitlin and Abe, and hurried off to my cousin Grace’s 5th birthday party.  It was lots of fun and bonus…I got to spend time with my beautiful baby cousin Cecilia.  I may kidnap her one of these days.

After hanging out there for a few hours we headed off to go to Austin’s work party.  It was definitely a weekend full of parties!  They played minute-to-win-it games but me and Aust did not do too hot.  We were the last ones to win our prize but we basically got the best one so it was okay :) Austin left with a new waterproof video camera, a jumbo bag of Ghirardelli chocolates, and cash in hand.  Now that’s what I’m talking about!

Yesterday was the real birthday day!  Unfortunately we both had to work which took some of the fun out of it and to top that off, I had a class until 6:30 pm that I had to go to because it was the last one of the semester.  Kinda a bummer but that’s why we celebrated the entire weekend :) On my way home, I stopped by Pizza Hut to grab some dinner for us which turned into over an hour long adventure because they were super busy.  So I didn’t end up getting home until after eight.  What a bust!  Then we laid a blanket on the living room floor, spread out the grub, and ate while we watched our favorite show, The Walking Dead.  It was a nice and relaxing evening and the perfect way to level out our crazy weekend.

Overall, I’m just so thankful for my birthday boy! He’s the best ever and makes me the happiest, luckiest girl in the world.
I love you babe! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
