a california birthday

To celebrate Austin’s last year as a 20-something-year-old, we planned a little getaway to California for a few days. This trip also came in replacement to the New York City vacation that we were supposed to go on in September that we had to cancel last minute, so it was nice to be able to sneak away for a bit kid free! (Huge thank you to Austin’s ma and pop for taking care of Scarlett for us!!) We hit up Universal Studios for a couple days and witnessed the all amazing Harry Potter land, drank butterbeer just so we knew what it was, went to the Getty Museum which was beautiful, strolled down Hollywood Blvd, ate tasty food, waited in line to meet the Grinch only so we could show the picture to Scarlett, stumbled upon a free Alessia Cara concert, and made a quick visit to a chilly beach to catch an ocean view before heading home. And because I’m so far behind and still talking about December when it’s already June…I’ll leave it at that. Such a fun trip with my birthday boy!

aloha hawaii

Oh Hawaii, where to even begin! Three months late is where…

Thanks to Austin’s crazy amount of traveling in 2014 we were able to use up some points and take a sweet sweet, hotel and travel expenses paid, vacay to Hawaii! My mom and Mauri were kind enough to make the trip to Utah to spend the week with our Scarlett girl. You can read all about the week they had together here. I was definitely a stress case about leaving her for that long. I hadn’t ever been apart from her for more than eight hours since she was born, let alone overnight. And with her track record with other people I was nervous for my mama. But I knew she would be oh so loved and well taken care of whether she liked it or not!

The timing of it all ended up being a little bit crazy; when Aust and I initially planned the trip we had no idea that we would be moving. We scheduled the trip over Mauri’s fall break so she could come out with my mom. We thought it would be perfect for them to come stay at our house to keep Scarlett in her element, help make everything a little less painless. Buuut then we sold our house, had to move out two weeks before our trip, moved in with Austin’s parents, and turned Scarlett’s little world upside down. Just. In. Time. My mom was still excited to come spend time with her though and arranged to stay at my Grandma Goldsberry’s house with Scarlett for the week.

After we left things took a hard, unexpected turn. Scarlett actually ended up doing really well (I just need to venture off more often!), but my Aunt Jana had gotten a mastectomy the week prior and her health was declining rapidly. Looking back on the week it was a tender mercy that my mom was able to come spend some time with her dear little sister during the last days of her sister’s life, but a baby keeping her on her toes and not letting her get much sleep at night meant a draining and exhausting week on all levels for my beautiful mama! On Monday October 12th, my mom sent me a text letting me know that Aunt J had been in the ICU for a couple days and was being sent home with hospice care. Her gall bladder was full of infection and her liver and kidneys were hardly functioning. Later that evening, my sweet Aunt passed away. I’m grateful that my mom could be there, grateful that she could be with her parents through those tough days, and grateful that Scarlett may have helped provide a little happiness amidst the sorrow. I wish I could have been there to provide the baby chasing, sleep deprived, physical relief for my mom, but overall I think the timing of it all was a sweet miracle.

Miss you everyday, Aunt J.

From this beautiful post by my mom: “The Lord compensates the faithful for every loss. That which is taken away from those who love the Lord will be added unto them in His own way. While it may not come at the time we desire, the faithful will know that every tear today will eventually be returned a hundredfold with tears of rejoicing and gratitude.” (Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin)

To recount our week in Hawaii, I’ll try to keep the descriptions brief and let the pictures do the talking! Here comes an overload…

This beach was one of the secret gems we found while we were there. It was huge, so pretty and basically empty. We heard it’s the locals favorite spot because it takes a little off-roading and a four wheel drive car to get to, so it never gets overcrowded with tourists or anything. Easily our favorite beach we went to. We were warned that the tide was too high for swimming at this time of year, but I’m usually too scared to swim in the ocean anyway so no biggie haha. We just kicked back in the silky sand, dipped our toes in the ocean, saw some crazy surfers, and watched the sun go down. My kind of beach day!

^^See that little snorkel? That’s my boy! We wanted to do quite a bit of snorkeling while we were there so we ended up buying a couple sets at the local Costco (we might have eaten the majority of our meals there too, can’t beat $1.50 hot dog combo). We hit up a few of the popular snorkeling spots throughout the week and saw a good variety of sea life! Funniest story…one day while we were snorkeling, Aust had kind of wandered away from me chasing some fish on our little action cam. I was just swimming along by myself and all of a sudden saw a massive sea turtle like three feet in front of my face. You seriously don’t realize how big those things are until they are right next to you. I didn’t know if they were dangerous (I know, I’m a little uninformed) so I immediately turn the other direction and frantically swim away as fast as I can. The adrenaline was in full swing people, I was kind of freaking out haha. Once I had made some distance I stood up to search for Austin so I could tell him.  Once I caught up to him and he informed me they aren’t dangerous, I was so bummed I didn’t stick around to appreciate seeing that dang turtle! After some searching we found it again and caught it on video. That time I thought it was super cool, slightly redeemed myself haha.

One night while we were there, the resort put on a little Luau dinner and show. It was just served at their restaurant so it wasn’t completely authentic, but we wanted to do something semi cultured. And those pina coladas were da bomb.

The weather was so sporadic. The picture above and below were taken pretty close together, just on different parts of the island. Blue skies to clouds! Luckily we only got rained on a couple times, and it was the warm, enjoyable type of rain. Oh so niiiice.

We had lunch at the resort before our flight home then hit up the movie theater to kill the last couple hours before heading to the airport. I know, sounds lame when you’re in such a beautiful place but we didn’t want to get sandy after we checked out of our room and it gets dark at like 7pm there. So it was the best option :) Then thanks to my traveling man…

Boo yeah! That made for a nice overnight flight home.

Here is a short little video with a few of our adventures. We made it for a small contest thing (hence the royalty free soundtrack haha) which ended a week earlier than we thought so…might as well share it somewhere. Good memories :)

Kauai, you were amazing. Until next time Hawaii!

san diego

Over the weekend of July 24th (thank you Utah for celebrating Pioneer Day), we took a trip out to San Diego with the Wride’s and the Pack’s. I feel extremely lucky to have our friends so close and to all be in the same stage of life together! I think it’s rare for a group of college friends to end up in the same place, but I’m sooo glad it worked out that way. With Kaitlin and Abe’s baby number two on the way, we thought we better take advantage of the “only child” stage we’re all in and go on a family/friend vacay.

Thursday morning, Austin and I flew into San Diego with Kaitlin and Abe, grabbed our rental cars, and hit up Old Town to kick off the day. Jesse and Brittney went to visit her parents in Vegas the day before, so they arrived a little later and met up with us for dinner.

unnamed^^And this is how the Mormon Battalion tour went with the bebes haha. They didn’t appreciate it as much as we did.

Friday was our zoo day. There’s a lot of hype around the San Diego Zoo so we were all looking forward to it. Unfortunately, we were there right in the middle of the day, it was super hot, and the animals were laaaazy. Most of the big exhibit animals that you go to the zoo to see weren’t even out, such a bust. Brittney and Jesse had been before and said that this time was definitely a let down compared to last. Oh well, what can ya do! At least on our way in, this nice family stopped me and Aust and asked if we had bought our tickets yet. We hadn’t, and they had two extras that they would sell us for $35 a piece. Great deal compared to the $50 we would have spent at the door! So after all was said and done we felt a little better about the slightly lame zoo day since we saved thirty bucks haha.

Saturday was our beach day.  After some deliberation and in an attempt to avoid parking chaos (impossible on a Saturday at a beach), we ended up at Cardiff beach per recommendation of a restaurant owner the day before. We rented some umbrellas and boogie boards and had a great time! Easily Scarlett’s favorite day.

a farewell

I need to stop even pretending that I’ll stay on top of this blog stuff one day, life never slows down! But better late than never.

Toward the end of June, Scarlett and I made the trek out to Colorado for Shilo’s mission farewell.  Aust had to stay home for work – such a hard working daddio! He’s the best.

We hitched a ride there with Taylor and Lynnea.  Scarlett did pretty good most the way, but around the time we got stuck in bad traffic was when she decided to lose her cool.  There weren’t any exits we could take for a loooong time so we just rode it out. I think Uncle Tay was feeling the tension, driving in slow traffic with a screaming baby is the worst.  After about 30-40 minutes she finally wore herself out and fell asleep. Hallelujah.

20150617_124143

Taylor and Lynnea were spending the first couple days with Lynnea’s family so we met up with my mom and the girls and caught the last hour of the ride home with them.  Scarlett was feeling rejuvenated after a little walk in the grass time so the rest of the drive went off without a hitch!

That night, my mom took me, Shi, and Mauri to see Wicked.  My dad gave up his seat so I could go and stayed home with little Scarlett lady.  Thank you thank you thank you papa! Even though she may not have loved it at the moment, the time spent with Grandpa Billy did wonders – a couple days into our visit she was willingly going to him and letting him hold her – quite a feat if you know our girl!

20150617_193057

^^We technically weren’t allowed to take pictures in there, but thought we could sneak one in before the show started. This is the best we got before getting chastised :)

Over the next few days we stayed busy shopping and helping Shilo get some of the things she needed, tie-dying shirts, welcoming more company, going to Mauri’s swim meet, eating good food, and enjoying our time together!

She’s going to be an amazing missionary!

After church we had a delicious Father’s Day dinner, packed up and got ready for our flight back to Utah.  We didn’t want to leave our boy completely high and dry on Father’s day.

^^Getting closer…haha.

We made it to the airport (a little bit behind schedule) and I was sooo happy to see that there was no security line.  Traveling alone with a baby is not my fave so that was one less stress.  After walking through the detector, they asked me to stay there so they could do the hand strip test thing.  But oh “there’s no one available to do it so you’ll need to wait”.  Great.  After about ten minutes a guy finally comes over, rubs the strip on my hand, and puts it in the machine.  Then the screen turns red.  I’ve got some sort of explosive on my hand?  Perfect.  That has never happened.  (And side note, I must look like a hard core person because they do all the extra hand tests and pat downs on me every time I go to the airport.  A mom alone with a small baby can be very intimidating, let me tell you.)  Since it turned red they needed to take me in a private room for a pat down.  But oh, “we need two females to do it, and there’s no one available so you’ll need to wait here.”  Sweeeet.  Not like I’m trying to catch a flight or anything.  Fifteen minutes later a couple ladies finally come over but oh, the room is being used.  Mmm loving all this.  Another good five minutes pass before we get in there.  Once in the room, they tell me I need to set Scarlett down which did not go over so well with the babe.  She screamed the whole time trying to get me to pick her up.  Yay.  Thanks for putting my baby in a great mood right before we get on a plane.  Ugh.  Anyway, not a great experience.  We were some of the last to board but at least we made it!  And Scarlett did pretty well during the flight so I’ll count my blessings.

The next week, Shilo came down to Utah to spend some time with friends before heading off.  We met up at Kneaders to squeeze a little extra time in with her.

Missing this girl!  She’s already rockin’ it in the field and I know she is going to be an inspiration to so many!  You can read about her experiences here.

Love you Lolo! See you in {less than} 1.5.
