a california birthday

To celebrate Austin’s last year as a 20-something-year-old, we planned a little getaway to California for a few days. This trip also came in replacement to the New York City vacation that we were supposed to go on in September that we had to cancel last minute, so it was nice to be able to sneak away for a bit kid free! (Huge thank you to Austin’s ma and pop for taking care of Scarlett for us!!) We hit up Universal Studios for a couple days and witnessed the all amazing Harry Potter land, drank butterbeer just so we knew what it was, went to the Getty Museum which was beautiful, strolled down Hollywood Blvd, ate tasty food, waited in line to meet the Grinch only so we could show the picture to Scarlett, stumbled upon a free Alessia Cara concert, and made a quick visit to a chilly beach to catch an ocean view before heading home. And because I’m so far behind and still talking about December when it’s already June…I’ll leave it at that. Such a fun trip with my birthday boy!

november in colorado

About halfway through November, I flew to Colorado with Scarlett to visit the family for a couple weeks before Thanksgiving. Austin stayed back to work, (we missed daddy those ten days!) but he was able to come out for the holiday weekend with Taylor and Lynnea.

We played our hearts out at Gigi’s, lounged, chatted, got hairs did, play-dated with Lizzie and her nephew, shopped, baked, feasted, and played some more. A perfect visit!

Scarlett {thankfully} really enjoyed the airport (her new Mickey D toy helped haha). Our flight didn’t leave til like 8:30 pm so I was nervous she would get tired and lose her cool but we made it break down free!

Then she was so pumped to be there that she didn’t go to bed until 1:30 am that night. Let’s just say that started a little bit of a trend so the days and nights were loooong for this mama throughout that first week. Thankfully the good company made it very bearable!

Aust and I took on the cheese tray prep.

20151126_120534

Pretty fancy if I do say so myself. Lynnea’s family joined us around noon and we dined on some cheese and veggies while we waited for dinner to finish cooking. Scarlett must have been worn out because after eating probably a whole can of olives, she passed out.

20151126_125536

This might sound awful but I had hoped and hoped that she would nap through Thanksgiving dinner so I could eat in peace :) And boy did my girl come through! Not only did she nap through dinner, she slept for four hours. I got to eat, take a nice little nap, work on a puzzle, and play some games baby free. My lucky day. Once she finally woke up we got her settled in for her own little feast.

aloha hawaii

Oh Hawaii, where to even begin! Three months late is where…

Thanks to Austin’s crazy amount of traveling in 2014 we were able to use up some points and take a sweet sweet, hotel and travel expenses paid, vacay to Hawaii! My mom and Mauri were kind enough to make the trip to Utah to spend the week with our Scarlett girl. You can read all about the week they had together here. I was definitely a stress case about leaving her for that long. I hadn’t ever been apart from her for more than eight hours since she was born, let alone overnight. And with her track record with other people I was nervous for my mama. But I knew she would be oh so loved and well taken care of whether she liked it or not!

The timing of it all ended up being a little bit crazy; when Aust and I initially planned the trip we had no idea that we would be moving. We scheduled the trip over Mauri’s fall break so she could come out with my mom. We thought it would be perfect for them to come stay at our house to keep Scarlett in her element, help make everything a little less painless. Buuut then we sold our house, had to move out two weeks before our trip, moved in with Austin’s parents, and turned Scarlett’s little world upside down. Just. In. Time. My mom was still excited to come spend time with her though and arranged to stay at my Grandma Goldsberry’s house with Scarlett for the week.

After we left things took a hard, unexpected turn. Scarlett actually ended up doing really well (I just need to venture off more often!), but my Aunt Jana had gotten a mastectomy the week prior and her health was declining rapidly. Looking back on the week it was a tender mercy that my mom was able to come spend some time with her dear little sister during the last days of her sister’s life, but a baby keeping her on her toes and not letting her get much sleep at night meant a draining and exhausting week on all levels for my beautiful mama! On Monday October 12th, my mom sent me a text letting me know that Aunt J had been in the ICU for a couple days and was being sent home with hospice care. Her gall bladder was full of infection and her liver and kidneys were hardly functioning. Later that evening, my sweet Aunt passed away. I’m grateful that my mom could be there, grateful that she could be with her parents through those tough days, and grateful that Scarlett may have helped provide a little happiness amidst the sorrow. I wish I could have been there to provide the baby chasing, sleep deprived, physical relief for my mom, but overall I think the timing of it all was a sweet miracle.

1995-05 Jana, HS graduate picture

Miss you everyday, Aunt J.

From this beautiful post by my mom: “The Lord compensates the faithful for every loss. That which is taken away from those who love the Lord will be added unto them in His own way. While it may not come at the time we desire, the faithful will know that every tear today will eventually be returned a hundredfold with tears of rejoicing and gratitude.” (Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin)

To recount our week in Hawaii, I’ll try to keep the descriptions brief and let the pictures do the talking! Here comes an overload…

This beach was one of the secret gems we found while we were there. It was huge, so pretty and basically empty. We heard it’s the locals favorite spot because it takes a little off-roading and a four wheel drive car to get to, so it never gets overcrowded with tourists or anything. Easily our favorite beach we went to. We were warned that the tide was too high for swimming at this time of year, but I’m usually too scared to swim in the ocean anyway so no biggie haha. We just kicked back in the silky sand, dipped our toes in the ocean, saw some crazy surfers, and watched the sun go down. My kind of beach day!

^^See that little snorkel? That’s my boy! We wanted to do quite a bit of snorkeling while we were there so we ended up buying a couple sets at the local Costco (we might have eaten the majority of our meals there too, can’t beat $1.50 hot dog combo). We hit up a few of the popular snorkeling spots throughout the week and saw a good variety of sea life! Funniest story…one day while we were snorkeling, Aust had kind of wandered away from me chasing some fish on our little action cam. I was just swimming along by myself and all of a sudden saw a massive sea turtle like three feet in front of my face. You seriously don’t realize how big those things are until they are right next to you. I didn’t know if they were dangerous (I know, I’m a little uninformed) so I immediately turn the other direction and frantically swim away as fast as I can. The adrenaline was in full swing people, I was kind of freaking out haha. Once I had made some distance I stood up to search for Austin so I could tell him.  Once I caught up to him and he informed me they aren’t dangerous, I was so bummed I didn’t stick around to appreciate seeing that dang turtle! After some searching we found it again and caught it on video. That time I thought it was super cool, slightly redeemed myself haha.

One night while we were there, the resort put on a little Luau dinner and show. It was just served at their restaurant so it wasn’t completely authentic, but we wanted to do something semi cultured. And those pina coladas were da bomb.

We had lunch at the resort before our flight home then hit up the movie theater to kill the last couple hours before heading to the airport. I know, sounds lame when you’re in such a beautiful place but we didn’t want to get sandy after we checked out of our room and it gets dark at like 7pm there. So it was the best option :) Then thanks to my traveling man…

Boo yeah! That made for a nice overnight flight home.

Here is a short little video with a few of our adventures. We made it for a small contest thing (hence the royalty free soundtrack haha) which ended a week earlier than we thought so…might as well share it somewhere. Good memories :)

Kauai, you were amazing. Until next time Hawaii!

san diego

Over the weekend of July 24th (thank you Utah for celebrating Pioneer Day), we took a trip out to San Diego with the Wride’s and the Pack’s. I feel extremely lucky to have our friends so close and to all be in the same stage of life together! I think it’s rare for a group of college friends to end up in the same place, but I’m sooo glad it worked out that way. With Kaitlin and Abe’s baby number two on the way, we thought we better take advantage of the “only child” stage we’re all in and go on a family/friend vacay.

Thursday morning, Austin and I flew into San Diego with Kaitlin and Abe, grabbed our rental cars, and hit up Old Town to kick off the day. Jesse and Brittney went to visit her parents in Vegas the day before, so they arrived a little later and met up with us for dinner.

unnamed^^And this is how the Mormon Battalion tour went with the bebes haha. They didn’t appreciate it as much as we did.

Friday was our zoo day. There’s a lot of hype around the San Diego Zoo so we were all looking forward to it. Unfortunately, we were there right in the middle of the day, it was super hot, and the animals were laaaazy. Most of the big exhibit animals that you go to the zoo to see weren’t even out, such a bust. Brittney and Jesse had been before and said that this time was definitely a let down compared to last. Oh well, what can ya do! At least on our way in, this nice family stopped me and Aust and asked if we had bought our tickets yet. We hadn’t, and they had two extras that they would sell us for $35 a piece. Great deal compared to the $50 we would have spent at the door! So after all was said and done we felt a little better about the slightly lame zoo day since we saved thirty bucks haha.

colorado christmas

Phewww. We’re back in action. I apologize to anyone that was scared away by the weird “malware” stuff that’s been going on over here. The bright red screen that popped up one day definitely freaked me out. Stupid hackers. Luckily, none of my post content was lost…we just had to delete the entire site and build it from scratch. Such. A. Pain. Hence my major lack of motivation to blog. And the work in progress design. Here’s to hoping that never happens again!

So Christmas! It was perfect. We gathered in Colorado and the entire family was together for the first time (for Christmas that is) since years ago. Aust even had two whole weeks off work so we really got to enjoy the holiday. It slightly helped make up for the 100+ nights that he spent sleeping in a hotel room in 2014. Just like a sliver of slightly. That’s a whole lotta nights for our hard working daddy-o! Since I’m really behind the time with this one, a post of pictures will have to suffice for memory sake. I’ve considered skipping the catching up stuff altogether, but it was Scarlett’s first Christmas so I probably shouldn’t slack. My more put together mama has way more pictures and all the details documented here and here.

We made our way out to Colorado on December 20th and Scarlett did awesome. (Can’t say as much for the way home.) Loved the time we were able to spend with the whole fam before Christmas!

The day after Christmas my wonderful parents treated us all to Cheesecake Factory. So so yummy. Then on the 27th, (I think) we went out to take family pictures. It was cold. Our desired picture taking spot was closed. The camera had a mini freak out. There was an icy slip and fall. And the baby was not very interested in the timed camera on a tripod. Despite things not going completely our way, we still came out with a few decent shots and some fond picture taking memories.

vegas or bust

The day after Thanksgiving Aust had to head to Las Vegas for a quick work trip so he brought Scarlett and I along!  Considering we were only there for a short 1.5 days, we really rocked that city.

On the drive down we took a pit stop at the Valley of Fire right outside of Vegas.  Perfect chance to take a little hike, stretch our legs, enjoy the warm temps, and see lots of red rock.

After we finished up there we wanted to make a quick stop at the outlets to check out the Black Friday deals…bad idea.  Not only did it take us over an hour and a half to get into the parking garage alone (we would have quickly changed our minds if there was any other way out), it was a mad house.  I guess we were naive in thinking it would have cleared up a bit by the evening time.  Wrong-o.  Lesson learned.  We at least got away with a killer deal on some shoes for Aust and a couple new outfit pieces for Scarlett.

After the shopping adventure we checked into the hotel, relaxed for a bit, then headed off to show Scarlett the Bellagio fountain and city lights! She was tired, but impressed :)

On Saturday Austin had to work during the day so Scarlett and I kept ourselves busy at the hotel.  Unfortunately we couldn’t find a swimsuit for her at this time of year (that was another reason why we even went to the outlets…apparently they still only sell winter apparel regardless of the summer-like temperatures), but that didn’t stop us from hanging poolside for a little chunk of the day.

life as of late

Who knew that if you were terrible at being consistent with blogging before you had a baby, that you would be even worse after.  Shoulda saw that one coming.

I’ll briefly break the past couple months down…

Scarlett has grown up.  Like a ton.  Can’t believe how fast they learn and grow!  She kindarolls over, doesn’t love being on her tummy and hasn’t figured out that it’s an effective means of moving herself around.  She’ll roll from tummy to back if we forced her there :) She likes to smile and squeal at her daddy.  He’s definitely the fun one.

My parents threw a little “Meet Scarlett” get together.  Perfect chance for Scarlett and Landon to reunite :)

Long story short, we shopped and shopped and shopped until we found the perfect Halloween costume.  Minnie Mouse for a girl that loves Mickey!

Props to my mom for making these perfect ears!

…and I took Scarlett on her first plane ride.  So not a fan of flying with a baby by myself.  Thank goodness for a mom and a sister who took the time to get me all the way to the gate before parting ways.

We are blessed.  Looking forward to Halloween this weekend and the rest of the holidays to follow.  Stay tuned, more to come!

california road trip

Last month we took Scarlett on her first road trip to California!  Austin was going out there for work so we decided to add on a few extra days, drive instead of fly, and make a vacation out of it!  I was a little nervous for the 10 hour car ride with the babe but she handled it like a champ.  On the way there I think we ended up stopping three times to give her a little break but on the way home we only stopped once!  She must have been extra worn out from our adventures.

We started the week off in Long Beach and spent a couple days there.  It was pretty overcast the whole time unfortunately, but the view from our hotel was beautiful!

Living the dream!  This baby could get used to the hotel life.

image003

The first day we hit up the aquarium and Scarlett slept through the entire thing.  She was only six weeks old at the time so she probably wouldn’t have appreciated it anyway :)  Just being a good baby for mom and dad!

They had an enclosed area where these birds were just flying free.  They kept swooping inches away from my face…made me a little nervous haha.

The next day we headed to Los Angeles and went to the zoo.  It was huge.  And not like packed-with-animals huge, just walk-forever-in-between-exhibits huge.  They seriously could cut out like half the area if they just put stuff closer together.

Scarlett was ready for her first zoo trip!

We spent the most time watching these guys.  I always get so intrigued!  There were tons of chimps in there too, probably the most I’ve seen at a zoo.  At one point they all got into a huge brawl and were screaming and pounding everywhere.  It was nuts!

After walking miles at the zoo we headed over to the observatory.  We didn’t last there very long because our girl was so over being in the Bjorn.

The “Hollywood” sign back there in the haze.

That night we met up with Austin’s aunt and uncle for dinner at Parker’s lighthouse then headed to our hotel in L.A. closer to where Austin would be working.

Scarlett was ready to sprawl out after her long day!

The rest of the week Austin worked during the day but we were able to get out and enjoy ourselves in the evening.  One night we headed over to the Santa Monica pier and introduced Scarlett to the beach!  She was lovin’ it.

yellowstone

Over Labor Day weekend, Aust and I were able to take a trip up to Yellowstone with our favorite travel buddies, Kaitlin and Abe.  I have never been so I really didn’t know what to expect but I must say, I was thoroughly impressed.  Other than the rotten-egg-sulfur-mist that brought on the occasional gag, the diversity and immensity of the entire park was amazing.

We literally were pulling into the parking lot as Old Faithful went off.  So we had to hang around for another hour and a half to see it.  How lucky of us :)

The Grand Prismatic Springs – one of my favorites.  Apparently the rainbow of colors that you see are bacteria from the extremely hot temperatures.  Kinda nasty, but beautiful!

Bubbling mud pots.  That is some hot mud.

On day two, we decided that we should probably start switching up our poses to give our pictures some variety.  Obviously we were really great at coming up with ideas :)

 Night time adventures.

This was called the “Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.”  It was spectacular.  Pictures definitely don’t do it justice.

Buffalo!  These guys were another one of my favorite things.  They are huge.  And you get so dang close to them which is super cool.  It did make me a little nervous at times because Aust was sure to show me all the youtube videos of people getting charged by them, at Yellowstone, before our trip.  How thoughtful of him huh?

Just hanging out in the middle of the road.

We all had a great time!  It was nice being able to spend a full 3.5 days there because there’s so much to see.  If you haven’t been, it’s definitely one of those, “gotta do it at least once” sort of things.  Totally worth it.

lake powell

So a couple weeks ago over Memorial Day weekend, Aust and I were able to head down to Lake Powell for a nice little getaway with some friends.  It is always so great to get out of town for a few days and enjoy some good company!  Jesse’s grandparents live near the lake on an awesome, basically middle-of-nowhere ranch.  We stayed at their house and loved the yummy food (fish galore, let me tell ya – you’ll see why in just a moment), fresh grape juice, roasting marshmallows around the fire each night, hot tubbing, hiking with his 80 year old grandma – she was a champ, swimming at the lake, fishing, shooting, and all that jazz.  It was a good time…

The first day we were there, a few of the boys went fishing bright and early and the rest of us enjoyed our sleep and went on a hike.

Grandma taking a shade breather.  It was hot.

Then at some point, shooting happened.

Abe and Austin with their shotguns.
Kaitlin is a boss.
This about sums up how great I am at shooting guns :)

Court and his {girl}friend Samarah rockin the pistol.

On our way to swim at the lake…

 the girls,

the boys (Jesse is killin that turban),

and our sumo sand man!

Abe was a great sport.  He had tons of sand on him and this masterpiece took probably an hour.  Totally worth it :)  It was a pretty intense workout for him to break free.

We loved the fire and smores each night.  Pretty much my favorite summertime activity.

In the morning before we headed back home, Kaitlin and I decided that we needed to experience this insane fishing that the boys were raving about from a couple days before.  Jesse’s grandpa does not joke around when it comes to fishing so we got up at the crack of dawn – 4am to be exact – and headed out to the lake so we could be the first ones on the water.
The sunrise was beautiful.

McKay reelin’ one in.

The net queens.

This is me trying to kill the fish and beating Austin’s hand instead :)

Those fish were coming in left and right.  It was crazy. Literally the second that a pole would go into the water, a fish would bite and Kaitlin and I had to run around like mad women to pull them out with the net.  That entire cooler was filled to the brim within 15 minutes (total they caught three coolers full – over a hundred fish, which explains the fish feasting everyday). I am not usually one to actually enjoy fishing but I must say, it was quite a thrill.  One that I will probably never have the chance of experiencing again haha.  I guess that’s what you get when you go with the professional gramps!
After our boat ride/ultimate fishing trip we were on our way.  Thanks again to Jesse for bringing all of us and to his sweet grandparents for showing us a real good time.  We had a blast.
